Divestment From Fossil Fuels: Matlock Meeting

Lisa (Transition Town

Chesterfield), Reg and Keith from our Coalition, and members of other Derbyshire groups, met Dave Wilcox, Chair of Pensions and Investment Committee, Derbyshire CC to consider the case for pulling out of investment in fossil fuels. The need and growing political pressure to leave as much of our fossil fuels in the ground make the risk of stranded assets (worthless fuel stocks that regulation will prevent from being burned) very real. Those managing the funds are understandably cautious but said they would consider the financial case. But the other consideration is ethical.  Politicians are elected to consider political implications  and refusing to pull out is the equivalent of  saying that in the nineteenth century we should have invested in companies which traded slaves, because that is the best way of making money. We urge everybody to join in the Derbyshire Divestment campaign.   https://campaigns.gofossilfree.org/petitions/divest-derbyshire
