Up to 40% of the guests at a homeless shelter have a job, but still can’t afford a home, the Chief Executive told LBC.
James O’Brien admitted his shock when Sheila Scott revealed that many of the people who need her shelter are in work.
She said: “They will be working for well-known High Street chains, some of them will be on zero hours contracts, some of them will be working for cleaning agencies on short-term contracts with bits and bobs here and there.”
She said that traditionally, homeless shelters would help guests get a job and build a deposit to get somewhere to live. But she said that was now impossible due to the housing crisis in London.
Ms Scott added: “People just don’t believe it. They say there must be somewhere, aren’t they illegals or something. But no, they are just people who are working and trying to find somewhere to live.”
Listen to the remarkable call above.
